Why Your Metabolism is Slow

Do you know why your metabolism is so slow?  The speed at which food that is consumed and converted into energy is the definition of metabolism.  The faster that your metabolism converts food into energy, the faster you burn calories.  The faster the metabolism, the more calories you need a day to survive.  Many people do not have fast enough metabolisms to keep up with the amount of food that they eat.  Pretend that your metabolism is a burning fire and wood is the fuel for your fire.  As long as your fire is burning very hot, it will continue to burn wood and at a rapid rate.  However, if your fire is small, it won’t require as much fuel.  This means that it’s not necessary to burn more fuel and the additional wood will be stored for later use.

Your metabolism is affected by many factors.  Here’s the reason why your metabolism is slow and why it’s hard for you to lose weight.

1.        Genetics – it’s really unfair, some people can eat whatever they want and not gain an ounce.  However, other people who eat the same amount of food will gain weight at a rapid rate.  Some people are born with slower metabolisms than others.  If you’ve been overweight the majority of your life, then this are the case for you.  Genetics have given you a bad hand in losing weight; however, this should not deter you from trying to lose weight.  You are not a victim and a change in your eating habits using the 6 Week Body Makeover is the right way to kick your slow metabolism into high gear.

2.       Age – Another factor is age.  Unfortunately, the older we get, the slower our metabolism gets.  When you were younger, you might have been able to eat anything you want and not gain weight.  However, once you hit 30, anything you eat goes straight to your stomach.  The pounds slowly start adding on and it gets to the point where you can’t see your feet.  However, the good news is that you can reclaim your body by adjusting your meal plans and learning to restart your metabolism and change it to burn more calories, just like in your youth.  As we get older, we lose bone density and muscle mass.  We need to replenish the muscle that we lose as we get older as lean muscle tissue is the way that we burn calories.  Essentially, the more lean muscle we have, the more calories we will burn throughout the day without having to do anything.

3.       Amount of Activity in Your Lifestyle – Did you notice that the weight started to creep up on you once you started working?  A sedentary lifestyle will decrease your metabolism and increase the fat storage.  Your metabolism works based on instinct and necessity.  When you are sedentary and do not exercise, your metabolism will not burn additional calories and it will try to regulate what is appropriate and how much food energy it will need for fat storage.  When you were younger, you were always active.  Reducing the amount of physical activity in your life will make your whole body slow down, which includes your metabolism.  Exercise has a direct effect on a person’s metabolic rate.  The Michael Thurmond accelerated fat burning section goes through step by step instructions to get the most out of your cardiovascular exercise to increase your metabolism.
