First, determine what your maximum heart rate is. Take 220 and subtract that from your age. In order to maximize your fat burning potential you will need to stay in your zone. This target heart rate is found by multiplying 55 to 65 percent of your maximum heart rate. If you are on the heavy side, then you probably should stick to 50 percent of your maximum heart rate.

After you've found your target heart rate, you can find out if you're in the zone by simply taking your pulse. However, if you are too lazy to take your pulse, you can also buy a heart rate monitor. Heart rate monitors usually cost about 100 to 300 dollars so it depends if you want to spend that much to take your heart rate. Take your pulse by putting your middle and index finger on the inside of your wrist. Don't use your thumb because your thumb has a strong pulse and will confuse your pulse. Count the number of times your heart beats in 10 seconds. Multiply that number by six and you'll have your pulse. Make sure that your pulse is within the fat burning zone or else you need to walk/jog faster.
